The
road leads to a hill on which, commanding a
picturesque view, is the Chapel of Our Lady
of the Mount.
A series of steps leads to the
Chapel, which is built of laterite plastered
with lime mortar. It has three main altars
dedicated respectively to our lady of the mount,
St. Anthony and St.
Andrew. In old Goa, on
the summit of hillock opposite the Se Cathedral
stands the Church of Our Lady of the Mound
(Feast day, 8 September).
Neat stone steps
leads up to the top. The Chapel was constructed
by Alphinsi de Albuquerque in 1510. The chapel
was made to mark the victory of Alphnso over
Goa.
Built in typical Portuguee
style, the church is an absolute delight to eyes.
The three altars in the chapel are dedicated
to Our Lady of Mount, St. Anthony and St. Andrew. |
