The Gate Of The College Of ST. Paul

The College of St Paul was originally a college used to teach the ways of Christianity to local residents.

In 1542, the college was built over the top of the remains of an old mosque and used regularly until in 1570 it was abandoned due to an outbreak of the plague and was subsequently demolished in 1832.

During the period between its abandonment and its demolition it remained unused and had almost gone to rack and ruin, but the process was helped along its way when the Government had it torn down to make way for the transport of goods.

While, strictly speaking, the Gate Of The College Of St Paul, isn’t a sort it still features in the Goa forts tour because of its historical importance and because of the solitary remaining piece of evidence that the structure did indeed once exist. All that remains is the arch of the gate with a cross at the peak of the arch.

As with many historical buildings of the area that you will see during your Goa forts tour, the gate is made of local laterite stone.

The columns found on either side of the gate were actually constructed of basalt.
