No Goa historical travel plan
would be complete without visiting the impressive
Viceroy’s Arch. Built by Vasco De Gama’s
grandson Francisco De Gama in 1597 the deer
crest of the De Gama family can be seen on
the rebuilt arch that now stands on the original
site.
The side that faces the Mandovi River
actually contains a small but still very
impressive statue of Vasco De Gama in full
uniform while there is also an inscription
to Vasco De Gama within the arch.
A Goa historical
travel tour will also show you the reverse
side of the arch that features a statue depicting
a scene of “Christian victory over
paganism”. The statue is of a crowned
woman standing on a native.
In 1948, after 351 years, the arch collapsed
but was rebuilt and restored in 1954. This restoration
was done very sympathetically to the original
except that it didn’t contain the third
tier that originally featured a bronze statue
of St Catherine. |
